Removing Urine from Carpet

Pat accidents happen every single day. Even the most well-behaved dog or cat can eliminate waste, so removing urine from carpet surfaces may be necessary.

If you remove this liquid as soon as possible after it has been deposited, it would be easier to clean up. The opposite of course is true as well. If you do not clean up a urine stain right away it can settle deep in the floor fabric and even stain the hard floor underneath.

The Urination Process:If you remove the smell right away your beloved pet will not return to the same spot to urinate. If you think your dog or cat has urinated on the carpet you should follow steps to correct the problem. That way, it will not get out of hand.

Cleaning up the Mess:Urine stains on oriental or wool rugs can be challenging. There is a greater chance of ruining a carpet or rug made of these materials.

Excessive urine stains and spotting can occur in these cases. Therefore, the use of a professional carpet cleaner is highly recommended.Nonetheless, carpet cleaning can be done using one of a variety of methods designated for use on different materials. This is further described below.

Supplies and Methods Guide:

All urine stains are basically the same, as they all are ammonia-based. However, you should still take extra care meant specifically for certain floor materials and for specific pets.

Here is some tips for cleaning up dog urine messes on certain kinds of carpets:The Formula 409 Spray cleaner has been very helpful for use on carpets made of synthetic fibers such as polyurethane or similar plastic material. This or Petzyme can help break down the proteins in urine that cause odor.

Wool or oriental rugs require a slightly different method of cleaning. For the wool rug you can use 1 tsp of neutral detergent. Dreft would be an excellent choice. This along with 1 tsp white vinegar and 1 quart cool water would also be very helpful.

For the oriental rug you could use both CitraSolve All Natural Cleaner and Borax Natural Laundry Booster. Read the instructions on the packages for more information.

Cleaning up cat messes requires similar mixtures of ingredients:For the synthetic carpets you could use the Formula 409 and/or distilled white vinegar. For the oriental rugs you could also use vinegar as a part of this solution: 1 part each of white vinegar, water, and hydrogen peroxide combined with 1 tsp mild dish soap and dry baking soda.

The wool rugs can be attended to using the same Dreft and white vinegar solution as would for the dogs. See above for more details.

Further Instructions:You can place an old towel over the area to blot up the excess moisture before you apply a liquid solution to be poured or sprayed onto a stain. Use all your body weight if necessary in order to easier soak up the stain especially if the urine is still wet.

A black light can make a dried urine stain easier to spot. Usually the enzymatic cleaners are recommended for cases in which an animals liquid waste is already dried.

After spraying on solution and blotting up a stain, you can then further deodorize it with baking soda. This should be sprinkled on an area that already has been blotted up with solution and blotted with rinse water.

You can even leave the baking soda side overnight or until the spot is dry. Then, you would vacuum the area.
